Fractional CTO Rates: Hourly, Monthly and What You Get
What fractional CTOs charge in the US, by the hour and by the month, what the price should include, and how a hands-on plan compares.
Fractional CTO rates in the US sit between $170 and $250 an hour for most of the market, with a median close to $200, and monthly retainers from about $3,000 to more than $18,000. Those numbers only mean something next to what they buy, so this article sets out the published rates, what changes them, and what a price should include when the CTO is also expected to build. For what the role itself covers, start with what a virtual CTO does.
Fractional CTO hourly rate in the US
The clearest public data comes from rate surveys of fractional executives. The middle half of fractional CTOs charge $170 to $250 an hour, the median is about $200 and the average about $212. Job posts from employers offer less, around $110 to $175 an hour, while candidates ask for about $213. Location moves the number: published ranges put San Francisco and New York at $275 to $350, Austin, Los Angeles and Miami at $200 to $275, and smaller US markets at $150 to $200.
| Market | Typical fractional CTO hourly rate |
|---|---|
| San Francisco, New York | $275 to $350 |
| Austin, Los Angeles, Miami | $200 to $275 |
| Smaller US markets | $150 to $200 |
| US middle 50% (survey) | $170 to $250, median about $200 |
| Offshore senior developers (for comparison) | $40 to $80 |
Monthly fractional CTO cost
Most engagements are sold as a monthly retainer for a share of the week. The published tiers look like this: about $3,000 to $6,000 a month for two to five hours a week of advisory, $6,000 to $12,000 for eight to twelve hours, $12,000 to $18,000 for 15 to 20 hours, and $18,000 to $25,000 for 25 to 32 hours. Traditional firms often add a three to six month minimum.
For comparison, a full-time CTO in the US costs $175,000 to $225,000 a year in salary, before benefits and equity, which takes the fully loaded cost past $250,000. The fractional CTO cost only makes sense if it buys enough of the same outcome for a fraction of that.
What moves fractional CTO rates up or down
- Hours: the effective hourly rate usually falls as the monthly commitment rises.
- Scope: advice alone is cheaper per month but more expensive per result, because someone else still has to build it.
- Risk: regulated data, multi-tenant platforms and investor deadlines carry a premium, because the cost of a wrong call is higher.
- Location and time zone: big-city rates are higher, and overlap with your working day is worth paying for.
- Exit terms: a long minimum or a lock-in on code and accounts is a hidden cost.
What a fractional CTO price should include
Before comparing two quotes, check what each one buys. A rate that includes the decision, the code and the deployment is worth more than the same rate for a slide deck. At minimum I would expect:
- A written record of each architecture decision and its reasons.
- Code and infrastructure in your own repositories and cloud accounts from the first day.
- A weekly working session in your time zone, with answers between sessions.
- An exit plan: handover notes good enough for the next CTO or engineer.
The decisions themselves follow a known order, the one in SaaS platform architecture: the decisions that come first. A fractional CTO who cannot explain that order for your product is expensive at any rate.
My fractional CTO rates
I price below the US middle of the market and include the building. Ad hoc work is $75 an hour. The monthly plans are:
| Plan | Hours a month | Price | Effective rate | Includes development |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CTO advisory | 20 | $1,500 | $75/h | No, decisions and reviews |
| Fractional CTO | 40 | $2,800 | $70/h | Reviews and the riskiest work |
| CTO + build | 80 | $4,800 | $60/h | Yes |
| Full-time equivalent | 160 | $8,000 | $50/h | Yes |
All plans are remote, on US hours, with no long minimum. What the hands-on plans look like in practice is described in Fractional CTO, and the platforms they are based on, such as the Omnitech CRM, are on the case studies page.
